I’m so excited to be back in Arizona after an incredible month furthering my Thai Massage studies in Chiang Mai, Thailand. While there I obtained certifications from the Old Medicine Hospital Shivagakomarpaj recognized by the Thai Ministry of Public Health. I also had the fortune to study with Ajahn Pichest Boonthume in Hang Dong.
I am now offering private Thai Massage sessions in studio or at home. I offer sessions at The Blissful Body on Fridays and at my home on other days. I can also travel to clients’ homes. Contact me to book a session.
Thai Massage, also called Thai Yoga Massage, is an ancient healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures. The founding father of Thai massage was an Ayurvedic doctor named Jivaka Kumar Bhacca, who is still revered in Thailand as the “father of medicine”. Born in India during the time of the Buddha, he is noted in ancient documents for his extraordinary medical skills, his knowledge of herbal medicine, and for having treated important people of his day, including the Buddha himself.
Traditional Thai massage uses no oils or lotions. The recipient remains clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the giver and receiver, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked. Thai massage is performed on a thin mattress on the floor, rather than on a massage table. The massage generally follows the “sen” (energy lines) with a great deal of attention paid to the feet and legs first before moving on to other areas of the body. A full Thai massage session typically lasts two hours or more, but can be shortened and includes rhythmic pressing and stretching of the entire body. This may include pulling fingers, toes, ears, cracking knuckles, walking on the recipient’s back (in certain instances), and moving the recipient’s body into many different positions.
